As autumn nears, we mean to linger on every delightful summer moment. For us, that means getting outside as often as we can. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be heading to parks, rivers, and pools with the car windows open the whole way. This has been such a gorgeous and mild summer and I really can’t stand thinking it’s about to end. But it will, and until then you can find me outside.

Last night, as Brian was putting the girls to bed, I stepped out into the dusk to water my modest garden. Like a lot of gardeners, I usually water at night so the plants have plenty of time to take up the moisture before the sun rises again. I can count on at least four mosquito bites, but I don’t mind because I am so taken by the roar of the cicadas. My research tells me they are loudest at the hottest time of the day, but I find there’s a certain fever pitch just as the sun is starting to set.
My productivity experienced a precipitous decline coincident with both the end of the school year and the advent of days topping the ninety degree mark. Correlation isn’t causation, but I think it’s safe to jump to a few conclusions here.
