
As the days and weeks add up, as the fall seems to have gone from just beginning to full-on, I’m feeling a little stunned. I’ve loved every minute of the mild early fall weather. Now that things have edged colder, and I find myself a little bewildered even thinking of coats. One of the great things about humanity is our adaptability. We adjust quickly to a set of circumstances; we experiment, assess, and move on. The downside of this survival skill is that as soon as a new achievement is attained, us humans are quick to renegotiate our happiness and needs. It’s the whole grass is always greener thing.
Today, it’s undeniable. The maple trees, still green last week, are quickly turning orange. In fact, all of the trees have begun to take on a hint of ochre. Sunlight has starting shining in from the southern-facing windows. Our back yard, having enjoyed full-on sun all summer, is now darkened by shadows most of the day.
